"Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.

Lesson 12: Jesus, the rock of our foundation

Review

In this section, we have seen...

1. Our call to discipleship;

2. The cost of discipleship to the believer;

3. The freedom from the dominion of sin;

4. The power of repentance to lead the believer to the Father;

5. The power of the blood of Jesus to cleanse the disciple's life;

6. The faith that the disciple activates to lay hold of the facts of new life in God;

7. The fellowship that is established with God through repentance and forgiveness;

8. The process of adoption by which believers become sons of God;

9. The life of a disciple as a new creation;

10. The Father's plan for empowering His children;

11. The disciple's life being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Finally, we shall consider...

1. How Jesus' life is the basis of the disciple's life;

2. The principle of being a "hearer" and a "doer" of the words of the Lord.

A. Jesus, the base rock for our foundation.

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 "According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. "

The Base Rock of the Christian Life is an experience with Jesus.

B. Rock or sand?

Read the Luke 6:46-49 and make sure you have answers to the following questions!

a. What makes for a sound life? 1. Coming to Jesus 2. Hearing His Word 3. Doing what He says.

b. Is it possible to hear and not do? Yes

c. What is a person like who hears and does the word? A builder who builds on solid rock

d. Why must the house be built upon the rock? Because of the inevitable storms of life.

e. What is the prime danger we face when we are building our Christian lives? Having no foundations.

f. What happens to the house without foundations? It falls down disastrously.

Luke 6:46-49 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great."

C. What is the next step?

Hebrews 5:12-6:3 "For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

6:1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of ...Repentance from dead works and of Faith toward God, of the Doctrine of baptisms, of Laying on of hands, of Resurrection of the dead, and of Eternal judgement. And this we will do if God permits."

Notice the synonymous terms...The First Principles of the Oracles of God...The Elementary Principles of Christ...The Foundation

Notice too, we cannot move on to maturity UNLESS God permits. He ONLY permits that when the foundations are properly laid.
