Lesson 24: The Millennial reign of Jesus:
Review
1. In the first series of lessons we saw how God has included
us into His family and adopted us as sons with all the rights and
privileges of sonship.
2. In this series, which comes to an end with this lesson, we
have seen how Father prepares us for service in His kingdom.
3. In turning from dead works, and putting our faith in God
and His Word; in understanding how He empowers us by bringing us into
Christ Jesus through the one baptism of water, Spirit and fire; in
setting us aside for particular works of service through the laying on
of hands; and in imparting His resurrection life, we are prepared for
the dgment of rewards so that we can rule and reign with Him for the
final restoration of all things.
In this final lesson,
we will consider some of the Lord's revelation about the
coming kingdom of glory.
1. We will see some prophecies about His coming;
2. We will see some prophecies about His restoration of all
things;
3. We will consider how He will rule and reign through His
resurrected people.
Our Objective
is to have a growing sense of the reason why we are here and
what the Lord is preparing us for.
A. The Coming King
Zechariah 14:1-4 "Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, and
your spoil will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the
nations to battle against Jerusalem; the city shall be taken, the
houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into
captivity, but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the
city. Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations, as
He fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on
the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount
of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large
valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it
toward the south."
The King is coming back to Jerusalem with cataclysmic results
on the geography of the surrounding land and upon His enemies.
Zechariah 14:9 "And the LORD shall be King over all the earth.
In that day it shall be; "The LORD is one," And His name one."
His kingship will extend over all the earth.
Daniel 2:44 "And in the days of these kings the God of heaven
will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom
shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume
all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever."
His kingship and kingdom will be eternal.
Isaiah 9:6-7 "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is
given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will
be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince
of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no
end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and
establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even
forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
His government will be progressive until it is complete.
Matthew 25:31-33 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and
all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His
glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will
separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from
the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats
on the left.
His assessment of each nation will be based upon the way they
dealt with His brethren.
B. The restoration of all things
1 Corinthians 15:24-28 "Then comes the end, when He delivers
the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all
authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies
under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. For "He
has put all things under His feet." But when He says "all things are
put under Him," it is evident that He who put all things under Him is
excepted. Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son
Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that
God may be all in all."
The last great enemy to be put under His authority is death
itself.
Ezekiel 47:1-12 "Then he brought me back to the door of the
temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the
temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the
water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the
altar. He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on
the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water,
running out on the right side. And when the man went out to the east
with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he
brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. Again he
measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came
up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through;
the water came up to my waist. Again he measured one thousand, and it
was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water
in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. He said to
me, "Son of man, have you seen this?" Then he brought me and returned
me to the bank of the river. When I returned, there, along the bank of
the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. Then he said
to me: "This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the
valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are
healed. And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever
the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish,
because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything
will live wherever the river goes. It shall be that fishermen will
stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for
spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish
of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. But its swamps and marshes will not
be healed; they will be given over to salt. Along the bank of the
river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for
food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They
will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the
sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine."
Restoration comes gradually for the whole earth as the water
of life flows from the throne in Jerusalem.
Isaiah 11:1-9 "There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of
Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD
shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit
of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the
LORD. His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by
the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; But with
righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the
meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. Righteousness
shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist.
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down
with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling
together; And a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear
shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion
shall eat straw like the ox The nursing child shall play by the cobra's
hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper's den. They
shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall
be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea."
Isaiah pictures the restoration of the earth and its freedom
rulership/government - Wisdom, leading to Understanding, producing
counsel and power which is released in the knowledge and the fear of
the Lord.
Zechariah 6:12-13 "Then speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the
LORD of hosts, saying: "Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! From
His place He shall branch out, And He shall build the temple of the
LORD; Yes, He shall build the temple of the LORD. He shall bear the
glory, And shall sit and rule on His throne; So He shall be a priest on
His throne, And the counsel of peace shall be between them both."'
C. The way the Lord will rule
Isaiah 11:1-5 "There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of
Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
